How Spot Levels Become a Contour Map

Interpolating between the points produces contour lines at equal elevation intervals - closely spaced contours mean steep ground, widely spaced contours mean gentle slopes.   1. The survey team measures ground elevation at well-distributed points using total station, DGPS or LiDAR.
  2. Every spot level is a precise (E, N, Z) coordinate — denser points where the ground changes shape.
  3. Software interpolates between the points and threads contour lines through equal elevations at the chosen interval.
  4. Close contours = steep slope; wide contours = flat ground. Engineers read cut/fill, drainage and alignment straight off the map.

Deliverables include contour plans (0.5 m–5 m interval), DEM/TIN surfaces, L-sections, cross-sections and earthwork volume computations.
