How We Locate Groundwater Beneath the Ground

Interactive demonstration — move the slider to widen the electrode spacing and sound deeper into the earth.

Vertical electrical sounding (VES) cross-section showing how current electrodes detect a groundwater aquifer A cross-section of the ground with four layers: dry topsoil, clay, a saturated sand and gravel aquifer, and hard bedrock. Current is injected through electrodes A and B and measured between M and N. Wider electrode spacing drives current deeper; a moderate resistivity over the saturated sand layer reveals the aquifer. Topsoil (dry) — ~60 Ω·m Clay (impermeable) — ~25 Ω·m Saturated sand & gravel — AQUIFER Groundwater flows through pore spaces — ~88 Ω·m Hard bedrock — >600 Ω·m RESISTIVITY METER A B M N VES SOUNDING CURVE 10 30 60 100 AB/2 (m) ρa
  1. Electric current is injected into the ground through the outer electrodes A and B, while the voltage drop is measured between the inner electrodes M and N.
  2. With a short spacing the current samples only the shallow, dry topsoil, giving a moderate resistivity reading.
  3. Widening the spacing drives the current deeper: a sharp drop marks impermeable clay, and a moderate rise over saturated sand reveals the water-bearing aquifer.
  4. At very wide spacing the current reaches high-resistivity bedrock — the complete sounding curve is inverted to give the depth and thickness of every layer.

Schematic of a vertical electrical sounding (VES) using a Schlumberger array. Amber arcs are current flow lines between electrodes A and B; dashed blue curves are equipotential surfaces — the potential electrodes M and N draw practically no current, they only measure the voltage difference ΔV between the equipotentials they sit on (ρa = K·ΔV/I). Values are illustrative; real surveys measure dozens of spacings and invert the curve numerically.
